Case of the Week – Oregon State Jury Awards Woman $101,500 in Damages for False Imprisonment

A woman spent more than a day in custody although the local sheriff’s office learned she was innocent shortly after she was arrested. Instead of being released, she was arraigned while shackled and dressed in inmate clothing. A few hours later, she was released. She told the deputies who arrested her that she had been the victim of identity theft, and that they should check her fingerprints to verify her story. They must have ignored her request! The victim stated that she hopes this case makes it more likely this won’t happen to anyone else.
