A few years ago the City of Freeport spent $50,000 on beatification efforts. The deer have now over run this City and parts of Stephenson County. If you want Bambi in the City, then forget flowers, new trees, vegetables, and most types of shrubs. The landscaping tool of choice in Freeport is now mulch. Damage done by deer to properties in this City runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is a losing battle – more deer every year. Unfortunately, our former mayor did not recognize any problems facing Freeport. Will our new mayor be any different? Aldermen in seriously affected areas are blind to the deteriorating conditions in their wards caused by total neglect including failure to recognize the deer problem.
